5 Ways to Prepare Your Child for Nursery
Posted on November 19th, 2025

Starting nursery is a big milestone for both children and parents. It brings excitement, curiosity and sometimes a few nerves all completely normal. The great news is that there are gentle, simple steps you can take to help your child feel calm, confident and ready for this new chapter.

Here are five supportive ways to prepare your little one for nursery:

1. Create a predictable routine

Children feel more secure when they know what to expect. In the weeks leading up to nursery, begin introducing small routines such as: waking up around the same time having breakfast together getting dressed with your support reading a book before bedtime. Routines don’t have to be perfect just consistent enough to help your child feel steady and reassured.

2. Talk positively about nursery

Your child looks to you for cues about what’s safe and exciting. Use warm, encouraging language such as:

“You’re going to have so much fun!”

“You’ll make new friends.”

“There will be lots of toys and activities to try.”

This helps build anticipation rather than anxiety.

3. Practise small independence skills

Nursery encourages children to explore and do things for themselves. You can gently prepare by encouraging: putting shoes on with little help, carrying their own bag, choosing snacks, washing hands independently. These small wins boost confidence and help your child feel capable in a new environment.

4. Visit the nursery environment (if possible)

If your chosen setting offers visits before opening or settling-in sessions, take advantage of them. Seeing the space, meeting the adults and exploring the toys helps your child feel familiar and safe. If visits aren’t possible yet, you can still prepare by: looking at photos of nurseries online, reading books about starting nursery, role-playing nursery games at home. Familiarity makes everything feel less overwhelming.

5. Create a “goodbye ritual”

Many children feel more secure when they know exactly how they will say goodbye each day. You can build your own ritual, such as: a special hug, a kiss and high-five, a little phrase like, “See you later, have a great day!” These comforting signals help make transitions smoother.
